Studies show that almost 80 percent of all the known diseases today are quite related to stress. And since the discipline of “yoga” is known to be an effective stress-reducer, more and more people are getting hooked into this ancient practice of relaxation.

To verify the effectiveness of yoga in reducing anxiety and stress, numerous research and studies have proven benefits of the practice. Some of the findings state that yoga can increase a person’s strength and can generate energy. Yoga can also improve a person’s mental alertness by incorporating the importance of focus, memory, and concentration. Aside from improving one’s inner balance, practicing yoga can also reduce blood pressure, relieve pain, and improve digestion.

If you want to reap the innumerable benefits of practicing yoga, you should know what are the things you might need. Although yoga is basically all about easy and smooth steps, you should make mental notes on what the yoga equipment that are crucial for your great yoga experience.

1. The first thing to consider when you have finally decided to join the yoga bandwagon is clothes or clothing. Having breathable and comfortable clothes are a must for yoga practitioner especially for those who are just starting. If you want to feel sexier, wear a shirt or top that is form-fitting. This is recommendable because many yoga positions involve the head down to your hips. When it comes to pants, you can wear any exercise pants and shorts for as long as these are not made from lycra because it can cause you to slip since in some poses.

2. Next to clothes are the yoga shoes. Although yoga is often done barefoot, you should at least get a comfy pair of shoes perfect after yoga sessions or classes.

3. One of the most important yoga equipment is the yoga mat. Also known as the “sticky mat,” one of the staples of doing yoga is the presence of yoga mats. If you are attending a class in a gyms or any yoga studio for that matter, the yoga mat helps identify you chosen space. Aside from the personal space the mat gives, it is beneficial for you because it would ensure your safety while performing a series of yoga positions that serve as a cushion on the hard floor.

The four things mentioned above are the basic yoga equipment you’ll need if you want to practice yoga. But as times went by, yoga teachers and the yoga practitioners themselves were able to come up with other pieces of yoga equipment that are quite helpful in practicing yoga.

One of the most popular sources of the optional yoga equipment is the Iyengar tradition. As defined, the Iyengar style yoga says that to be able to achieve the maximum benefit of yoga is by having the proper alignment in the positions. To be able to have proper alignment of poses, beginners must use props and other optional yoga equipment for their bodies to be used to doing different yoga styles. Most often than not, these optional props can be seen in the yoga studios. These are provided because a yoga practitioner wouldn’t need to use it for a long time.

You might want to consider other optional yoga equipment for you to avoid possible injuries due to lack of preparation:

- Blankets. You can sit or lie on it during a yoga session.
- Blocks. These are good for standing positions because for you can be comfortable while improving your alignment.
- Straps. These are used for bound poses if you need to hold onto your feet but cannot are not capable to reach them.
